Ventura County’s biggest unincorporated community, Oak Park is situated in the Southeastern tip and is bordered on the west by Thousand Oaks, the south by Agoura Hills and Westlake Village, and the east and north by the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
A quiet bedroom community, Oak Park was established by famous radio team Jim and Marian Jordan — better known as Fibber McGee and Molly — when they bought ranchland here back in the 1950s. But housing development didn’t take off until the late 1960s when there was still just one access road in and out of the town. Despite its growth over the decades, Oak Park has retained its idyllic feel by the residents’ refusal to transform it into an independent city or annex it into neighboring Thousand Oaks.
Rich in natural beauty, Oak Park has plenty of parks, trails, and open spaces. The nearby Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers additional trails, including hiking, running, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and lots of wildlife such as birding and land-based whale watching. In town, you can find chic boutiques, coffee shops, and eateries, and Oak Park Plaza has been a mainstay shopping center with popular stores and restaurants. Oak Park also boasts its own library, community activities, and a well-regarded school district.
Today, Oak Park is home to many families and working professionals and has a high concentration of creatives, including artists and designers. Housing costs are higher than the national average but are generally more affordable than in other California communities. Many residents own single-family homes, but you’ll find condos and apartments here too, all offering locals a bit of anonymity within a greater metropolis.
